Multiple sclerosis is a chronic neurological condition that affects the central nervous system (CNS), which is made up of the brain and spinal cord.
Multiple sclerosis affects more than 2.3 million people worldwide, and more than 400,000 in the United States. Most people are diagnosed3 between the ages of 20 and 50, and the disease affects more women than men.
Multiple sclerosis symptoms result when an immune system attack affects myelin, the protective insulation surrounding the nerve fibers of the CNS. Common symptoms include walking difficulties, fatigue,
numbness or tingling, muscle spasms, cognitive changes, bladder problems and vision problems.
There are different types of multiple sclerosis and these include: relapsing-remitting MS (RRMS), primary progressive MS (PPMS), secondary progressive MS (SPMS) and clinically isolated syndrome (CIS).
